Meet the DFEND Team
Jamie I. Baum, PhD
Hi, I’m Jamie! I’ve worked in the Department of Food Science in the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture for 9.5 years. I studied at the University of Illinois and have a PhD in Nutritional Science. In my spare time, I love to read, cook, travel, and spend time with my family (including my 10 pets!). My goals for DFEND 3 are to engage in 30 minutes of physical activity 5 days per week and eat 3-5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day.
Erin K. Howie Hickey, PhD
I’m originally from Connecticut and have lived in Northwest Arkansas for 5 years. I have a PhD in exercise science and am a faculty member in the Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation. My favorite physical activity is anything outside, mostly walking, jogging or cycling. My goal for DFEND 3.0 is to incorporate strength training at least 2 days per week.
Emma Hendy
Emma is a master’s student working on DFEND as her thesis. She has an undergraduate degree in nutrition/dietetics and is excited to learn from DFEND. Emma hopes to increase her physical activity and drink more water daily throughout DFEND.
Bryce Daniels
Hi, my name is Bryce Daniels, MS, and I am from Greenbrier, Arkansas. I am currently pursing my PhD in exercise science. I am a certified strength and conditioning coach and have worked with diverse populations including Olympians at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO, Apple employees in Cupertino, CA, and adolescents in Northwest Arkansas. I enjoy being outdoors where I can hike and fish. During DFEND 3, I would like to increase my water intake by 25 fluid ounces a day.
Jamie McDermott, MS, RDN/LD
I’m a registered dietitian (RD) offering virtual nutrition counseling and wellness education to individuals, families and businesses nationwide. I hold degrees in both nutrition and psychology, and merge these two fields when working with clients. My private practice, which is primarily focused on weight management, combines evidence-based nutrition education with successful and compassionate behavioral change methods. I’m a wife and mom to two amazing boys and love to explore the outdoor beauty of Northwest Arkansas with my family. One of my goals as a DFEND 3 team member is to serve as an approachable, trustworthy nutrition resource and provide reliable, fact-based information to the public.
Danielle Higuera
I am currently in my sixth year of training in clinical psychology Ph.D. program at the University of Arkansas. My research focuses on emotion processes, self- and emotion regulation, substance use, and posttraumatic stress. Throughout my training I have gained experience providing psychological services in various settings including the local school clinic, domestic violence shelter, county drug court, women’s prison, and VA hospital. I enjoy spending time with my cats, working on art/craft projects, reading, and exploring the outdoors. During DFEND 3, I hope to use my background in psychology to help participants move toward achieving their health goals.
Lily Smith
Hi everyone! My name is Lily Smith and I am a senior at the University of Arkansas pursuing a degree in Food and Culinary Science. When I’m not working on DFEND 3, I enjoy reading, running, cooking and spending time outside. My goal is to try one new workout activity a month.
Keeley LaGrone
Hi, my name is Keely LaGrone and I am a first year Master’s Student in Athletic Training here at the University of Arkansas. I am originally from a small town in Texas. I did my undergraduate degree at Texas A&M University to which I received a Bachelor’s in Kinesiology. In my free time I enjoy working out and training other people to be at their best as well. One thing I would like to achieve in DFEND 3.0 is educating others on the impact of behavior change in your fitness journey.
Zach Roberts
Hi I’m Zach, and I’m currently getting my Bachelor’s in Nutrition and Dietetics and my Bachelors in Kinesiology with an Exercise Science concentration. I’ve been working at a chiropractic center for 2 years now, so my life is centered around making people happier and healthier! My hobbies include powerlifting and playing water sports on the lake. One goal I have with DFEND 3.0 is to help inspire individuals to make life-long changes!
